Dear San Marino Staff, Students, Parents and Community,
Welcome back to the 2019-20 school year! This year promises to be an exciting year for the San Marino school community. I am truly honored to serve San Marino Unified as Superintendent and thank you for the generous support you have extended to me as I transition into my new role. As an educator with 26 years of experience working in nearby communities, I have paid attention with a keen interest and admiration to the deep commitment that San Marino has for its students and schools. I know that together, we will continue to strengthen the arts, athletics, activities, and academic opportunities provided to all students.
In San Marino, we are committed to preparing students to be highly successful in their post-graduation studies and work, to be engaged citizens, and to be productive contributors to their world. As we continue to refine our work with high quality and innovative instructional practices and learning activities enhanced by cutting-edge technology tools, we will keep our eyes clearly focused on the needs and talents of each and every student. We envision that teachers and students will appropriately utilize technology to communicate, think critically, and solve relevant problems. We will be equally committed to supporting our students’ mental and emotional well-being, supporting teachers in student-centered shifts in teaching and learning, supporting counselors as they address the emotional, physical and social barriers that can inhibit student success, and by supporting parents and families in navigating the many challenges of raising children in this brave new world.
Throughout the upcoming school year, we will enhance our connections to the community as we engage our families and stakeholders in authentic conversations about what it means to be a San Marino student and graduate. As SMUSD leadership develops a comprehensive plan to guide the District’s work, we will listen to teams of students, teachers, counselors and administrators, and parents and community stakeholders to identify needs and develop priorities for our work in San Marino over the coming years.
There is much to be done including addressing our significant budget deficit, attracting new resident families while experiencing area-wide declining enrollment, addressing facility needs, transparently communicating the values, mission and vision of our Board and District, and authentically involving our community in appropriate ways to help set a new course built on relationship, trust and honesty. I hope that you see, as I do, the tremendous opportunities for us to continue to grow as a school community while developing this culture together. Each of our stakeholders are essential partners in the success of our students and we value and encourage your involvement.
I cannot wait to begin this new chapter together as we launch the 2019-20 school year. I look forward to many years together as we elevate our already great District to new heights.
